Why Sexy Justice?

HanselJustice. Like Owen Wilson’s character Hansel in the movie ‘Zoolander‘, it’s so hot right now. It’s sexy, in vogue, it’s on the radar.

We hear this word thrown around so often in church circles that the power of the word in a Biblical sense can often become diluted, clouded and almost devoid of its meaning.

The awareness and knowledge of fighting the injustice in this world has increased, especially amongst Christian youth and young adults.  Whether this awareness actually amounts to young people engaged and involved in their local communities on a consistent basis or sent out for cross-cultural mission work when the “justice dust” settles remains to be seen.

“Awareness does not lead to change. It leads to choice.” – Captain Robbin Moulds

Are we following Jesus down the path of uneasy, uncomfortable Biblical Justice that requires us to burden ourselves by getting our hands dirty regularly – or are we settling for a comfortable, hyper real, sexed up version of justice and Christianity that we engage in at our convenience? Where the sum total of justice becomes a monthly financial payment or a quarterly neighbourhood clean-up (which in and of itself is not wrong), rather than a lifestyle of service and engagement with those on the fringes of society?

In light of this observation, the term “Sexy Justice” was coined to convey a metaphor of the way we almost have to sex up or package Biblical truths like justice to make them palatable or appealing. Sadly, when we do this, the radical message of Jesus is stifled by the layers of pizazz we apply on top.

Sexy Justice is a blog which seeks to communicate that Biblical Justice is not an option, it’s a mandate. Seeking to bring Kingdom compassion and justice isn’t always sexy and appealing. It can at times be hard, gritty, uncomfortable and requires sacrifice.

There is almost a divide – a gap between our experience of Christianity and what we read in the pages of the Bible. Perhaps this is because Biblical Christianity is a much more costlier way of living as opposed to soft, comfortable cultural Christianity. We by no means believe that we have this all figured out, as discipleship is a journey.  At the same time, we wish to explore the disparity and put thoughts out there in order to find ways to bridge the gap.

Sexy Justice exists to:

1. Confront people with the truth from scripture.

2. Renew their mindset and attitudes with grace so that the trajectory of their life may be Gospel-centred.

3. Empower people to walk the uncomfortable road with Christ through encouragement and admonishment; and for them to do likewise by helping others begin at step 1.
